CAFRE mobility improvement events not to be missed

LAMENESS in dairy cows is a serious welfare issue, and also adversely affects milk production, fertility and feeding behaviour.

On average each case of lameness costs £323 on a typical farm. The College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) in conjunction with AFBI and AgriSearch are holding four mobility improvement events on dairy farms across Northern Ireland.

Details of the first event can be found below, with the next three events due to be held in mid February and March.

The aim of these events is to provide farmers with practical advice on how to improve the mobility of cows and reduce lameness levels.

The events will focus on the following:

- Detecting lame cows early

- Vets will discuss hoof diseases and practical ways to reduce lameness

- Optimal footbath design & management

- Control of digital dermatitis

- Risk factors in the dairy cow environment

- Nutritional & management issues

Veterinary practitioners, CAFRE and AFBI staff will be available to provide advice on all aspects of lameness.

Farmers will also receive a free lameness pack providing practical information on ways to improve cow mobility on your farms. For more information, contact your local CAFRE Dairying Development Advisor.

Date: Thursday 7 February, 2013
