AS part of their Level 3 Extended Diploma in Horse Management, students have an opportunity to complete an optional module entitled ‘Prepare and Provide Care for Competition Horses’.

As part of this module the students recently visited the well known showjumping yard of Linda Courtney at Crumlin.

When they arrived at the yard, Linda very kindly showed the students around and gave them an introduction to some of her many horses. She explained that as part of her business she breeds or buys young horses and produces them slowly for selling. The students were extremely impressed by the facilities and the work ethic of the staff on the yard.

Linda’s groom, Veronica, who has worked for Linda for 14 years, then spoke to the students about choosing grooming as a career. She explained to the students about the skills, commitment, dedication and long hours that are required if they wished to pursue this career pathway. Linda’s second groom, Catriona also spoke to the students about how she got into grooming as a career.

Veronica and Catriona had prepared a horse for a show so the students got to see the standard that is required in the industry. Veronica allowed the students to view her grooming bag which is for shows only and gave them tips on how to present horses to the same standard. Tack cleaning was also discussed and how important it is to have the tack immaculate before sending a horse and rider out to compete.

The students thoroughly enjoyed the afternoon and learnt so much from Linda, Veronica and Catriona. They are looking forward to putting what they learnt into practice.
