THE countdown is now on for the annual European Angus Steak Tasting competition which takes place at CAFRE Loughry Campus this Monday, 25th February.

“The event is open to farmers, butchers, retailers and processors but there has been a marked increase in the number of butchers entering this year’s competition,” explained European Angus Secretary, Harry McGaffin.

“Many local butchers have been enjoying increased sales in the wake of the recent horse meat scandal as consumers have been turning away from processed meat ranges and by putting taste to the test in our competition it’s an opportunity to further underline the quality of their fresh and carefully sourced produce.”

Monday, 25th February is the first stage of the competition when blind tastings of fillet steaks, sirloin and rib-eye steaks will take place at Loughry.

The second stage of the competition will take place on Monday, 4th March, again at Loughry, when members of various Young Farmers Clubs will be on hand to blind taste the beef sausages, gourmet sausages and beefburgers that have been put forward for the taste test.

“This is the first year that beefburgers have featured in the competition and we as a Society are very much looking forward to the event,” continued Harry.

“The competition is open to all breeds of cattle and I believe that is what makes it special.”

Again this year the format remains the same with the competition being held in two categories – entrants with under 15 employees and those with over 15 employees.

The winners will be announced at a special awards evening and dinner which is being held at Tandragee Golf Club on Saturday, March 16.
