Farm sprayer operator wins FSOOTY Award
Gary Adams, from Mash Direct, 81 Ballyrainey Road, Comber, Co Down, BT23 5JU. Finalist in Farm Sprayer Operator of the Year 2012 for Farmers Weekly
GARY Adams of Comber, near Newtownards, has been rewarded as one of the UK’s top farm sprayer operators.
He was presented his prestigious accolade as a finalist of the Syngenta Farm Sprayer Operator of the Year at the International Sprays and Sprayers event, held as part of Cereals 2012 in Lincolnshire last week (13-14 June).
The acclaimed Farm Sprayer Operator of the Year (FSOOTY) Award is sponsored by Syngenta.
Mr Adams, farm manager for growers Mash Direct, is a highly experienced sprayer operator, responsible for spraying up to 1000 hectares a year. The company grows a diverse range of crops, including potatoes, carrots, parsnips, swedes and leeks, along with spring barley arable cropping.
To achieve high levels of performance and consistent results Mr Adams uses a tractor-mounted Amazone UF1501 sprayer. The farm has built storage tanks to capture rainwater for spraying – resorting to mains water for spraying only once in the past year.
Mr Adams’ local Syngenta area manager, Raymond Hilman, said: “Today’s sprayers are capable of delivering incredible accuracy, with a wealth of new technology available. But it’s down to the skills of the operators working to very high standards to achieve the best possible results.
“Gary has consistently shown outstanding skills as a sprayer operator. He has proved a worthy winner by demonstrating that best practice can deliver efficient, cost effective and, above all, safe crop spraying. Syngenta recognises that the skills of the sprayer operator are paramount in achieving the potential from all our crop protection products,” he added.
