Brexit would leave Welsh farmers '˜high and dry', warns Nia Griffith
Shadow secretary of state for Wales, Nia Griffith MP, has warned that the £240m a year that Welsh farmers currently receive from the European Union would be put at risk by a UK exit from the EU.
“If we vote to leave the EU, Welsh farmers will be left high and dry,” she says in a new interview with Progress magazine.
Griffith further argues that London is unlikely to step in to backfill the lost payments from Brussels. It is ‘fanciful’, she warns, to argue that farmer subsidies would not have been cut over the last six years if left in the hands of George Osborne.
Griffith continues: “The idea that we would receive this money from a Conservative government in Westminster if we left the EU is pie in the sky.”
