Father and son farmers convicted at Antrim Court

Father and son farmers, Dennis and Andrew Hamill, of Blackstown, Road, Crumlin, Co Antrim, were today (Thursday) convicted at Antrim Magistrates' Court on a number of animal welfare charges.

Andrew Hamill (29) was convicted of two charges of causing unnecessary suffering to two bovine animals and two charges of transporting two bovine animals that were not fit for the journey intended. He pleaded guilty and was fined £600 plus a £15 offender levy.

Dennis Hamill (59) was convicted of two charges of transporting two bovine animals that were not fit for the journey intended. He pleaded guilty and was fined £250 plus a £15 offender levy.

The case arose when a DAERA Official Veterinary Surgeon at an abattoir examined two animals presented by Dennis Hamill. The first animal was unable to bear weight on its left hind leg and the other animal had a large red bulbous mass on the right hind foot. In the opinion of the Official Veterinary Surgeon both animals had been caused unnecessary suffering during transport.
