WHEN it comes to bread, Irwin’s Bakery in Portadown knows how to use its loaf – after introducing a new concept traditional bread table to Tesco, Irwin’s has just been named as Tesco Outstanding Supplier for January 2013, only the second award of its kind made in Northern Ireland.
Caoimhe Mannion, Marketing Manager Tesco NI said: “We have introduced an Outstanding Supplier award, through which we will publicly celebrate and recognise the enormous effort our Northern Ireland suppliers put in for our customers.
“For January 2013, our Outstanding Supplier was Irwin’s Bakery. They have recently introduced a delicious new table bread selection which is exclusive to Tesco and has really captured our customers’ imaginations. By presenting shoppers with some of their favourite Northern Ireland breads on a simple wooden display table in front of them, they can enjoy the traditional sights and smells of the local family bakery right here in our supermarkets and hand-pick their selection.
“The enormous dark crusty Belfast Baps topped with a dusting of flour and the fragrantly scented cinnamon and raisin loaf are just two of the products which Tesco customers can’t get enough of. They not only look great but they also smell delicious, so they’re hard to resist!”
For every month in 2013, Tesco Northern Ireland will name and promote one local supplier it believes worthy of the Outstanding Supplier award.
Stefan Szymura of Irwin’s said: “This is an exciting initiative for Irwin’s. Working closely with Tesco, we wanted to come up with a unique new way of presenting a range of traditional Northern Irish favourites. Having successfully trialled the bread table idea in 3 local stores, we now have 11 in place and hope to increase this to 20 Tesco stores offering our bread table concept. These breads represent Irwin’s local baking heritage at its best, so we’re thrilled that Tesco customers are responding so positively.”
This is an extension of the Tesco Taste Northern Ireland campaign, aimed at educating customers and connecting them with the people and places behind their favourite Northern Ireland food and drink.
Cliff Kells, Commercial Manager, Tesco said: “By highlighting the best of our local produce, we are bringing Tesco customers closer to the producer and the products and helping to grow their loyal local following. These local suppliers are tremendously important to Tesco in Northern Ireland – as a local buying team, we are working hard to maximise the opportunities for them and they in turn are making a massive effort to meet the strenuous demands of being a Tesco supplier. We want our suppliers to know that their hard work is important to us and we want our customers to know all about it too. Huge congratulations to Irwin’s – they have given 100% service over the month of January and they’re a well-deserved winner of our Tesco Northern Ireland Outstanding Supplier Award.”
Monthly award winners will receive a Bridgestone-style plaque, free publicity in local press, and point of sale promotion in all Tesco stores which stock their product.
