A rural charity has received a generous donation from a group of Scottish farmers, which will help them continue towards their goal of raising funds and increasing awareness of the organisation's key mission to help those who have depended upon the land for their livelihood.

The Montrose Farmers’ Ball committee presented RSABI with the cheque for £1,500 last week. Receiving the cheque from the members of the committee were RSABI Chief Executive Nina Clancy and Margo Wills, Regional Development Officer.

The Montrose Farmers’ Ball committee is made up of 10 farmers who organise and run the Montrose Farmers Ball every November.

RSABI provides financial assistance, support and a helpline to people with backgrounds in agriculture, forestry, fish-farming, rural estate work, gamekeeping, crofting and horticulture who, due to age, injury, illness or misfortune find that they are unable to cope. Last year it helped 900 people, contributed over £600,000 in direct financial support.

Nina Clancy had the following to say about the donation: “We’re always so grateful to those who provide donations to RSABI, and so we’re simply thrilled to receive a cheque for £1,500 from the Montrose Farmers’ Ball committee. Our thanks goes to them for their efforts in raising such a large sum of money for RSABI.

“This money will go a way towards helping us support those who have depended on the land for livelihood and now need a helping hand themselves, and we’re going to be keeping in touch with the members of the committee so they can see first-hand the benefit that their donation is having.”

Sandy Milne of the Montrose Farmers Ball committee said: “Every year we choose a different charity to receive our donation, and this year we decided upon RSABI. There were several reasons for this, but it was mainly down to the high demand they are experiencing due to the poor returns, and the hardship farming is experiencing at the moment.

“Each committee member is responsible for finding a quality prize to raffle during the evening, and if we have a particularly valuable or sought after prize, we auction it off to raise extra funds. Our dance is always well attended and is a great night out, so we’re looking forward to another one in November.”
