Walford welcomes new herdsperson to NSC

North Shropshire College's (NSC) Walford Farm has had a new member of staff join its flock, Jessica Simpson. Jessica is the new Herdsperson for the herd of cows at the Walford Campus and will be working with the agriculture students and the Farm Manager Richard Aldis.

Jessica will be working with the 300 strong milking herd on the Walford Farm, with both the Fullwood 24/24 herringbone milking parlour and the Fullwood Merlin Robot. The main emphasis of Jessica’s role will be looking after the health and the well-being of the animals, observing the animals carefully and checking for signs of ill health. A key time of year for the Herdsperson is calving, where Jessica will be present at the births and tend to the offspring.

This will not be the first time that NSC has had a previous student become an employee. Jessica studied at NSC in 2010, as an animal management student and has now come back to the College. Richard Aldis, Farm Manager, commented “Jess is a great addition to the hard working team we already have on the farm. She is fully committed to move the farm forward and will help to educate the next generation of farming professionals.”

There is still time to apply for agriculture qualifications at NSC, you can apply via our website www.nsc.ac.uk or call our Admissions Team on 01691 688080.
