Feathers will be ruffled this summer with the release of the first ever Chick lit novel written and recorded just for hens. The audio book for broody females was commissioned by the Happy Egg Co to help its flocks settle at night after research found that the human voice has a calming effect on laying birds.
Inspired by the Happy Egg Co’s free-range surroundings, Falling for Clooney follows the love life of Molly and her bid to catch the attention of the infamous - and devilishly handsome - rooster, Clooney. The story was written by renowned British author and hen-keeper Catherine Alliott, who has penned more than twelve tales of rural romance and sold over two million books nationwide.
Falling for Clooney will be given to all Happy Egg Co producers, to play to their girls in their hen houses. The story will also be available to download or stream for free on the Happy Egg Co website and Facebook for broods up and down the country to enjoy.
Founded in 2009, the Happy Egg Co is committed to producing great tasting eggs laid by the happiest hens. As part of its ongoing commitment to the highest standards of hen welfare, the free range brand is continually looking at new ways to further enrich and enhance the lives of its flocks. As well as plenty of green pasture to roam and forage, all happy egg farms are equipped with an assortment of activities to enhance the birds’ natural surroundings - from towers to perch on, sandpits for dust-bathing, and natural play areas with logs, foliage and cut branches.
Happy egg marketing director Steve Horton commented: “Talking to hens is one of the easiest ways to promote calm and wellbeing - and reassure them they are safe. Our producers work tirelessly to make sure their girls are happy and enjoy everything they need to lay the tastiest eggs. Arguably we could just leave a radio on in their house but this way our girls get a proper hen-tertaining story before bed.”
Catherine said: “I’ve been writing tales of romance for more than 20 years but penning Chick lit for actual chicks is definitely a first. I’ve grown up with animals, and now have over 80 of my own - including a flock of bantams - so combining my love of animals and writing was an opportunity too good to miss. It’s been a real experience - and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed sharing Falling for Clooney with the hens at happy egg. They’ve been good listeners - and my first ever feathered critics.”
