January duller and wetter than normal
THE Armagh Observatory has reported that January was duller and wetter than average.
The number of hours of sunshine was 33.1, which is nearly 30% less than the most recent 30-year (1981-2010) January monthly average and the dullest January since 1997.
The total precipitation for the month was 85.9 mm (3.36 inches), that is, about 15% more than the most recent 30-year (1981-2010) January monthly average. There was slight snow on four days, from the 18th to 21st.
The mean monthly temperature was 4.8 degrees Celsius (40.7 degrees Fahrenheit), which is virtually normal for the mean monthly average. The maximum temperature was 13.2 degrees C on the 29th, while the lowest air temperature was –2.8 degrees C on 10th. There were nineteen nights with grass frost and seven with air frost.
