Limousin breed hit top markets at local suck calf show and sales

THE NI Limousin Cattle Club Suck Calf shows and sales sponsored by the Ulster Bank Ltd were reaching high standards with tremendous turnouts of youngstock and surmounting market prices.

Starting off on the Saturday morning of 6th October the commercial stockbreeders headed to Ballymena and Newtownhamilton markets and then on the 9th October attended Hilltown and Swatragh markets.

Ballymena Market - Was packed with young stock from all breeds with impressive high entries in the Limousin section with 16 male and 8 female quality calves on show for judge Derek Frew, Chairman of the NI Limousin Cattle Club.

The male class was won by Mr V McMullan, Kilrea with his calf bred from his stockbull Carmorn Ubank, a Nenuphar son bred by C & F McAuley, Toomebridge. This calf later went on to claim Limousin champion, weighed in at 470Kg and attained top price of the day of 1800. Second place went to PJ O’Kane, Dunloy for his calf weighing 460kg and fetching 1100 and third place went to J Doyle, Kilkeel for his calf sired by his stockbull purchased from the Rodgers family, Dromara, weighed in at 310kg and fetched 860.

Heifer class was won by Mr V McMullan, Kilrea with a calf got by AI from Ampertaine Commander which was bred by Messrs W & J McKay, Upperlands and went on to weigh 300Kg and fetch 1130. Second in Heifer class went to Mr L Allison, Limavady with his calf by stockbull Carmorn Dunree, weight 350 and realising 910 in sale. Third in heifer class was Mr H McCahon, Aghadowey, with a calf bred from his stockbull Ampertaine Energise weighing 270Kgs and fetching 640.

NEWTOWNHAMILTON - Another fine market with quality stock present. Judge Peter Murphy, Mullaghbawn, Newry placed Mr E McCann, Mullaghbawn Newry first in the bull class with a calf out of Carrickaldreen Extreme a Wilodge Vantastic son. This calf weighed in at 520Kg and went on to achieve 1000 in the sale. Mr E McCann also received second place with a Ai’d calf out of Carrickaldreen Dallywag weighing 370kgs and fetching 730. Third place went to Mr G Cartmill, Whitecross, Newry for his calf bred with Epson bloodlines.

The Heifer class was won by Mr M Loye from Dorsey, Cullyhanna with an Ampertaine Bridgadeer calf, Ampertaine Bridgadeer is a Sympa son held by Ai Services NI Ltd, and this calf weighed 350kg fetching 600. Second place was given to Mr M Gorman for his Ovan Arthur sired calf weighing 280kg fetching 470 and Mr G Cartmill received third for an Epson sired daughter weighing 310kg and fetching 500.

SWATRAGH – a packed market and a packed sales ring at this evening sale. This year proved as exciting as last year with over 300 Limousin x calves for sale. Judge for the evening was Mr G Corrie, Newtownards and he had a tough task in both sections male and female when he was presented with outstanding quality calves. The bull class was won by Mr V McMullan, Kilrea for a son out of stockbull Carmorn Ubank bred by Mr F McAuley, Toomebridge. Weighing in at 344kg this calf attained a price of 1800 and Overall champion of the show receiving the Sam Kearney Memorial Cup from Swatragh market. Second place went to, the youngest breeder attending the event, Mr N Quinn, Galbally, Dungannon for his Rocky sired calf weighing 297kg fetching 1120 in the sale. Third place went to Mr V McMullan weighing in at 342kg and fetching 1420 in the sale.

The heifers class was won by Mr V McMullan for a Rossignol daughter who went on to achieve reserve champion title, weighed in at 332Kg and made top price of the sale, and this week, of 2900 selling to mainland UK. Mr V McMullan also took second place in the heifer class with a calf sire by Ampertaine Valhalla, a Rocky son bred by Messrs W & J McKay, Upperlands weighing in at 320 Kg and fetching 1700 at sale. Mr M Kelly of Limavady took third place with his heifer weighing in at 462kg and fetching 1240 at the sale.
