Loughry graduates drive change at Dunbia, Cullybackey
IN February 2009, Dunbia took over the Stevenson & Co. pig processing facility in Cullybackey saving it from closure.
To date Dunbia has almost doubled the workforce and continues to invest in the facility. The pork and de-boning facility currently processes 7,500 pigs per week and employs many Loughry graduates in key management positions across a wide range of business functions in the company.
Chris Quigg, General Manager, graduated from Loughry Campus with a Foundation Degree in Food Manufacture in 2007, explains that he is proud of the achievements of all his management team and of his association with Loughry Campus.
Speaking about his fellow Loughry graduates Chris believes: “The courses we undertook at Loughry Campus have been of great benefit to us in developing our careers. Loughry’s dedication to practical education, strong academic curriculum, and the chance to undertake work experience greatly enhances the opportunity of its graduates in securing careers in world class companies, like Dunbia.”
Two recent Loughry graduates are successfully managing the sales function at Dunbia Cullybackey. Christopher Gamble graduated in 2010 with an Honours Degree in Food Supply Management and Siobhan Carey was conferred with a BSc (Hons) Food Management and Marketing Degree in June of this year. Two years after starting with Dunbia Christopher is now the Commercial Manager for the site. Siobhan works closely with Christopher in her role as the site Sales Administrator. Siobhan explains: “Dunbia have been very supportive to me and invest in all their employees.” The company’s investment in its people is evident throughout the facility. Factory Manager, Nigel McNeill, has just started part-time study on the Foundation Degree in Food Manufacture.
Kathryn Lyle, a HND Food Technology graduate in 1998, joined Dunbia in January 2011 as Technical Manager. Her deputy, Kathy Patterson, who graduated in 2010 with an Honours Degree in Food Technology, secured employment with the company after completing her course at Loughry. Jill Bristow also graduated in 2010 with a BSc Honours Degree in Food Technology and now works as a Pig Procurement Officer.
Over the past number of years Dunbia Cullybackey has played a vital role in supporting the education programmes at Loughry Campus by providing students with industrial work placement opportunities. Currently Loughry students, Kathryn Rea and Ciara McCarry are really enjoying their work placement within the company. Students have benefited enormously from the experience gained during these work placements.
