Man arrested in tax fraud investigation

A 29 year old Banbridge man has been arrested in connection with a £200,000 VAT repayment fraud linked to the agricultural industry.

HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) criminal investigators searched premises in the Banbridge area of Co Down on Tuesday (7th August) as part of the investigation into suspected VAT and money laundering offences.

John Whiting, HMRC Assistant Director Criminal Investigation, said: “HMRC takes tax fraud extremely seriously and anyone deliberately choosing to evade the taxes they owe should expect not only a heavy fine, but possibly a criminal prosecution as well. Anyone with information about individuals who may be involved in tax fraud can contact the Tax Evasion Hotline on 0800 788 887.”

Investigations are ongoing and the man has been bailed to appear at a later date.
