Haltcliffe Gains sells for 5,500gns to lead Limousin summer sale at Carlisle

The first lot of the day, the February 2011-born Haltcliffe Gains from Messrs Ridley of Haltcliffe, Lonning Head, Wigton, Carlisle, sold for 5,500gns to take the top price at the British Limousin Cattle Society's Summer Sale of Bulls and Females at Borderway Mart, Carlisle on Friday 17th June.

Gains is by Haltcliffe Dynamo and out of the noted female, Haltcliffe Ainsi. His son, Haltcliffe Jonsson, was senior champion at Carlisle last October, where he subsequently made 11,500gns. Haltcliffe Gains sold to S & S Hough of Park Grange Farm, Pontefract in West Yorkshire.

The summer sale of bulls saw twenty sell to average a solid £3685 with a 67% clearance rate of the thirty bulls forward.

Selling at 4,800gns was Tomschoice Lust offered by James and Sarah Cooper of Hill Top Farm, Dacre in North Yorkshire. This February 2015-born bull, sired by Warrenderpark Geronimo and out of Tomschoice Desire, was accompanied by good figures for calving and carries two copies of the F94L gene. His sister is the dam of Tomschoice Ironstone, which is currently at stud in Ireland. Tomschoice Lust was purchased by WJ Marr from Cornhill, Aberdeenshire.

At 4,500gns was Dyke Jings, a November 2014 bull by Netherall Gilbert entered by JR MacGregor, Dyke Farm, Campsie, near Glasgow. His granddam, Dyke Cava, is dam of the 10,000gns Dyke Galaxy and of Dyke Hurricane, who made 6,000gns. Dyke Jings went locally when selling to MG Green, from Thorniethwaite, near Lockerbie in Dumfriesshire.

Embryo calf, Roxburgh Juggernaut, achieved a 4,000gns bid for John Elliot of Roxburgh Mains, Kelso. The November 2014 Wilodge Vantastic son is out of the noted Sarkley Ola. He was taken home by Forest Hall Farm, Selside, near Kendal in Cumbria.

RW Owen of Geirn, Carmel in Gwynedd, Wales paid 4,000gns to PJ Henshall of Sarkshields, Eaglesfield in Lockerbie, for Ringway Jotun, born in December 2014. His sire is the Henshalls’ stock bull, Ringway Foggy, a bull which goes back to Fieldson Alfy, while his dam is Ringway Beauty.

The third 4,000gns bid in the bulls came for Haltcliffe Larch, a Haltcliffe Fencer son and another from the Haltcliffe herd of Messrs Ridley. Larch’s dam, Haltcliffe Emulate, is out of Haltcliffe Usabelle, who sired the 15,000gns Haltcliffe Doctor. The March 2015 bull went to W & J Baines, who come from Hewthwaite, near Sedburgh in Cumbria.

At 3,800gns was the October 2014-born bull, Homebyres Jim, from John Logan’s herd at Kelso in Roxburghshire. A natural calf, he is by Anside Hawkeye and out of Homebyres Freya. Buyers were N McGill & Co, from Low Carseduchan, Newton Stewart.
