May enjoys fair weather
THE Armagh Observatory has reported that the weather in May was slightly drier and sunnier than average.
Precipitation amounted to 50.5 mm (1.99 inches), that is, about 13% less than the most recent (1981-2010) 30-year average. There was a continuous stretch of ten days from the 19th with no rainfall.
The number of hours of sunshine was 185.9, that is, about 7% greater than the most recent (1981-2010) 30-year average.
The mean monthly temperature was 11.2 degrees Celsius (52.1 degrees Fahrenheit), which is more or less equal to the most recent (1981-2010) 30-year average. There were seven days from 23rd with maximum temperatures about 20 degrees C. The highest maximum temperature recorded was 25.6 degrees C on the 25th, while the lowest air temperature was 0.3 C on the 5th and 9th. This means that the 25th was the warmest May day for more than 20 years, i.e., since 23rd May 1989 (26.2 deg. C), and the equal second warmest May day since 31st May 1922 (25.6 deg. C). There were thirteen nights with grass frost.
