Millars Texels plan major female sale

Cyril and Martin Millar are dispersing the entire adult portion of their noted "Millars" Texel flock at Carlisle on Friday 10th August. An Open Day is planned for Tuesday 7th at Glenleary Road, Coleraine.

CYRIL and Martin Millar, Coleraine are busy preparing final details for their forthcoming sale of Texel females to be held at Carlisle Mart on Friday 10th August.

Over 160 head are set to come under the hammer representing the entire adult portion of the highly successful “Millars” flock.

Texels have been farmed by the family for 25 years with the “Millers” prefix being founded in 2002 when daughter Sharon got married and retained the original “Glenleary” name.

Cyril and his son Martin were very selective when acquiring new bloodlines and sought females from Haddo, Glenside, Millvale and Sportsmans. These females have performed exceptionally well and have bred stock to sell regularly at five figured sums.

There has been considerable investment in stock rams with the mighty Mellor Vale Masterpiece stamping his authority right across the flock. Sons of this now legendary ram have sold to 29,000 and 22,000 guineas. His top priced son to date “Millars Outstanding” has certainly lived up to his name and has bred countless quality progeny to date. The sale catalogue includes two full sisters and several half sister to Outstanding.

The majority of the gimmers featuring in the sale are sired by either “Glenside Royal Sovereign” and “Sandleford Premier”. These are described by Martin Millar as “possibly the best batch of sheep that we have ever bred, and are real seed corn for both established and new breeders. The two shear ewes are mainly by Kelso President who was purchased at Worcester for 15,000 guineas.”

The Millars flock secured the Supreme Championship at Balmoral Show in 2010 with a daughter of Corrie Lancelot. Buyers will get the opportunity to purchase from this bloodline also with daughters included in the sale.

2012 was also a successful outing at Balmoral with a ewe lamb from the flock taking the Reserve Breed Championship. This super lamb is sired by Milnebank Special One (25,000 guineas) who has sired a number of lots in the forthcoming production sale.

In the last decade the Millars flock has taken three Supreme Championships and one Reserve at Balmoral Show.

Cyril adds: “We think we have a really special batch of sheep heading to Carlisle. Our dairy unit is continually expanding and this has resulted in the need to tailor our flock size accordingly. The entire adult portion will be offered for sale, and will allow buyers the chance to acquire quality females and select their own service or flushing programme.”

An open day is planned at the farm (Glenleary Road, Coleraine) for Tuesday 7th August, with visitors welcome from 1pm onwards.

All sale stock will be available to view – and a warm welcome is extended to new and established Texel breeders by the Millar family. For further details contact Martin Millar 07818 018453 or email for a catalogue today glenlearyfarm@btconnect.com.
