Nicholson discusses reform with Fisheries Commissioner
ULSTER Unionist MEP Jim Nicholson and his colleagues from the ECR Group met with European Commissioner for Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Maria Damanaki, in Brussels last week to discuss the on-going reform of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP).
During the meeting Mr Nicholson raised the need for the Commission to devolve more day-to-day management responsibility to member states and stakeholders as part of the reform package – adding that it must be “meaningful regionalisation”.
Speaking after the meeting Mr Nicholson said: “It was useful to meet with the Fisheries Commissioner, Maria Damanaki, this week to discuss the on-going reform of the CFP, during our meeting we discussed all aspects of the reform including the issues to be covered at next week’s Fisheries Council.
“I used the opportunity to reiterate the need for meaningful regionalisation to end the micro-management and bureaucracy from Brussels and allow member states and stakeholders to manage their fisheries in a more appropriate way plus raised concerns that decisions were being made contrary to scientific evidence.
“There are a range of key issues being considered as part of the current negotiations regarding the CFP, including; regionalisation, discards, the use of accurate science and the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund to name but a few. Successive Fisheries Commissioners have grappled with many of these issues before with limited positive progress being made.”
