ON Saturday 12th January, the Northern Ireland Young Limousin Breeders Club (NIYLB) moved from strength to strength as they experienced a successful calf spectacular at Ballymena Livestock Market in conjunction with the BLCS Limousin female sale.
Kevin Bohan, farm manager of the Ardlea Limousin Herd in Southern Ireland, had the unenviable task of judging an outstanding show of pedigree and commercial Limousin calves oozing style, quality and correctness which was highlighted by his line up of first prize winners. The pedigree championship consisted of Eniver Harry, owned and exhibited by Michael McKeefry; Derriaghy Hermonie, owned and exhibited by David Green & Sons; Millgate Hercules, owned and exhibited by Michael Loughran; Slieve Heidi, owned and exhibited by John McGeechan; Erne Harry, owned and exhibited by Raymond Crawford; and Culnagechan Hispec, owned and exhibited by Derek Hume.
After careful consideration Mr Bohan finally selected the impressive Eniver Harry, owned and exhibited by Michael McKeefry, as his Pedigree Champion and winner of the McDonalds of Sprucefield Cup for the Best Exhibitor Bred Animal of the show. This February 2012 bull calf was a son of Eniver Dot, sired by Ampertaine Abracadabra, and sired by Bailea Bullion, stock bull of the McKinney Brother’s Heathmount herd.
Reserve Pedigree Champion was Derriaghy Hermonie, owned and exhibited by David Green & Sons. This stylish February 2012 heifer calf was bred from a Wilodge Tonka daughter, Dinmore Elvira, and sired by the popular Ampertaine Commander.
After the Pedigree Championship the pedigree Limousin classes came to a close with a class for a pair of exhibitor bred pedigree Limousin calves that compliment each other demonstrating characteristics true to the breed. This was a very strong class with close competition; however Mr Bohan selected John McGeehan’s pair from the Slieve Herd, sired by Wilodge Tonka and Carmorn Cannonball, followed by Raymond Crawford’s pair from the Erne Herd, sired by Sauvignon.
Mr Bohan was then tasked with judging the remarkable Limousin commercial classes. The first prize winning steer was an April 2012 calf Steady Eddie sired by Swarland Eddie, owned and exhibited by James Alexander. First prize winning April 2012 heifer was achieved by Black Beauty, owned and exhibited by McKenna Brothers. Holding her own in the baby commercial class was May born heifer Eddie Rocket, also sired by Swarland Eddie and owned and exhibited by James Alexander. Steady Eddie went on to safely secure Overall Commercial Champion which was followed by the Reserve Commercial Champion Eddie Rocket.
Special prizes were awarded to several NIYLB members. Green brothers from the Derriaghy Herd won the Leslie Hood Perpetual Challenge Cup for the best heifer on the day of the show, owned by a paid up member of the NIYLB. They exhibited Reserve Pedigree Champion, Derriaghy Hermonie.
Furthermore Emma Murphy (19) won the David Adams Heaslip Memorial Endeavour Trophy for showing dedication to the NIYLB club throughout the year.
The Calf Spectacular has grown in popularity amongst exhibitors and spectators alike, and none of this would be possible without the generous support of the sponsors who not only provide monetary reward but give of their time on the day of the show, to compliment and congratulate prize winners. The club would therefore like to thank their sponsors; Animax, British Limousin Cattle Society, Brian McComb Contractors, Corries Farm Butchers, Firmount Veterinary, Greenmount Country Stores, Irwins Farm Feeds, John Thompsons, McKinstry Skip Hire, Minprint, MSD Animal Health, the Northern Ireland Limousin Club, Semen Store, the Ulster Bank, and the Ulster Farmers Union.
