THE 33rd Derry Ballinascreen Scouts and Cubs joined forces with the Sperrins Gateway Landscape Partnership in December to clear up litter along the Moyola river at Derrynoid Bridge.

In just one and a half hours 20 Scouts and Cubs filled over 15 sacks with take away boxes, cans, plastics and bits of car.

Fiona Bryant, Manager of the Sperrins Gateway Landscape Partnership was delighted with the results: “It just shows what a difference a few people can make to the landscape in a short time,” she said. “The walk here is so much nicer when you don’t have to look at other people’s rubbish. And now the wildlife is now less at risk from harm.”

Collwyn Brunton, Scout leader at the 33rd Derry Balinascreen Scouts states: “The Scouts and Cubs worked really hard. Cleaning up other peoples litter is a great way for them to appreciate the value of their landscape and they will now think twice before they throw litter from the car or over the hedge.”

Following their hard work the Sperrins Gateway Landscape Partnership rewarded the Scouts and Cubs with a campfire hotdog. The Scout leaders barbecued the sausages using the ‘Leave No Trace’ principles which help to limit the impact of peoples activities whilst encouraging them to enjoy and value the natural environment.

Litter is unsightly and it can be harmful to wildlife, often hurting or trapping smaller creatures or confusing animals into thinking rubbish is food or a suitable home. People often don’t realise the lasting impact to our environment they can have when throwing litter, dumping or fly-tipping at places like the Derrynoid Bridge and the surrounding landscape.
