21st annual UFU silage competition is launched

The deadline for the 21st Annual UFU Silage Competition is Friday 12th October.

The deadline for the 21st Annual UFU Silage Competition is Friday 12th October.

THIS week the Ulster Farmers’ Union launched its 21st annual silage competition, sponsored by John Thompson & Sons and Ecosyl Products Ltd.

Farmers across the union’s 25 groups are now invited to register their interest in the competition before Friday 12 October.

Entries will be judged in three classes – dairy, beef and sheep and maize.

UFU president Harry Sinclair said: “Last year seen a record entry from our members and it was a pleasure to see our group winners and national winners being honoured for their professional approach to silage making. Good silage making has always been a key element of farming in Northern Ireland where we rely heavily on our ability to grow as forage for our livestock sector. This year we have endured very challenging silage making conditions but nevertheless I expect the standard to be very high. Our silage competition encourages excellence and healthy competition among our members and we hope to see as many entries as possible submitted. Judging focuses on a range of important silage making components including the quality of the silage, good environmental measures and a good approach to farm safety.”

The competition has three classes, dairy, beef and sheep and maize and UFU members can enter up to two classes, one for grass silage and one for maize. There will be a range of prizes at group level and the overall winners will receive their prizes at an awards ceremony next spring.

Any UFU member wishing to enter should contact their local UFU group office before the 12th October deadline.
