Delegates support national pig rally
The UFU joined pig farmers across the UK in Downing Street this week to highlight the financial problems facing the industry.
The high profile protest generated headlines across the country as producers spelt out the bleak feature which the industry faces unless prices rise significantly.
UFU President Kenneth Sharkey and Union Pork and Bacon Policy Chairman Raymond Pogue led the local delegation to the rally which was co-ordinated by the National Pig Association.
Kenneth Sharkey said; "The losses in the pig sector can not be sustained and we are highlighting to consumers that high quality local sausages, ham, pork and bacon may not be available in future unless things change dramatically. Local pig farmers continue to lose money on every pig sold into the food chain".
Over ten thousand signatures were handed in to Downing Street, highlighting the plight facing pig producers.
At the rally shoppers were urged to support Quality Standard Mark UK pork, bacon, ham and sausages; retailers were urged to step up the prices they pay for local pork products; the food service industry was urged to use high-welfare local pork; and processors were urged to pass on price increases to producers.
The UFU will also be highlighting the industry's problems at the Northern Ireland Assembly in the weeks ahead, focusing on public procurement and country of origin labelling in the food service sector.
