THE Ulster Farmers' Union will begin consultation with its members following the launch of a public consultation by the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development on proposals for the introduction of EU rules on the electronic identification and individual movement recording of sheep.
UFU Deputy President, Harry Sinclair comments: "In recent years we have worked closely with DARD and the Commission to retain our existing sheep identification system, allowing us to maintain our vital export trade.

"Unfortunately, despite widespread opposition, the EU Commission has said that the introduction of the new sheep tagging and movement recording rules must go ahead from January 2010."

He adds: "It is vital that the new arrangements are implemented in a way which is easy to understand and will minimise the cost and paperwork on farm.

"A number of options have been proposed within the consultation and we will be discussing them fully with our members to ensure that the most cost effective, workable system is put in place that best suits the needs of the Northern Ireland sheep producer."
