WITH the help of the Voluntary Initiative (VI) the farming and crop protection industries have made great strides in promoting best practice when it comes to keeping pesticides out of water. Whilst this is good news the continuation of this foundation work is very important moving forward.

UFU President Harry Sinclair said: “The industry as a whole should be proud of what has been achieved in keeping pesticides out of water. The UFU have promoted the H2OK campaign and year on year deliver in partnership with CAFRE very successful National Register of Sprayer Operator training events.

“The quality of our drinking water is important to all, recognising that water monitoring has become ever more sophisticated it is very important that all who use crop protection products do so responsibly to avoid detection. The UFU are pleased to be represented by Tim McClelland on a special working group in the river Derg water catchment.”

Tim reported: “This is a great opportunity to engage with farmers aim is to keep the plant protection products where they should be – on the crop in the field – and not allow them to travel in the direction of our water courses.”

Grassland farmers are occasional users, whilst arable and horticulture producers apply plant protection products regularly, the grassland sector may only spray occasionally. Some grassland weed killers are used on grassland on average just once every five years. It is very important for those whose farms are predominately grass and forage based that there is someone on the holding who is correctly trained and holds the appropriate certificate of competence, or consider using a contractor.

It is very important that the product labels are read and understood and if in doubt users should get more information from their suppliers and/or an agronomist.
