MEMBERS of the Armagh NW Group, under the chairmanship of Lislea dairy farmer Billy Morton, travelled to Castledouglas in early May for the annual day trip to Scotland.

Ronnie Wilson and his son, Peter, hosted the morning visit to their new 800 cow diary just outside Castledouglas which is managed by Peter. The Wilsons have further expansion plans for this unit with the possibility of additional land purchase and increasing to 2,000 cows. The Wilsons have recently benefited from capital grant aid from the Agricultural Development Programme which has enabled them erect an impressive range of modern silos, cow and calf rearing housing.

Following a three course lunch at the Galloway Arms Hotel in Crocketford the group made the short journey to the suckler and beef finishing enterprises owned by the Barber family. This 2,700 acre farm is home to 1,800 suckler cows with 3,000 cattle finished each year. Mr Richard Barbour give members of the group a tour of the farmyard, stock and some of the outlying fields and members viewed the latest investment of a three million litre lined slurry store dug into the ground on an elevated site some distance from the farmyard which will greatly aid the management and spreading of slurry on the farm and dramatically reduce road ferrying costs.

One of the group office staff recently got married and the group managers, staff and office holders would like to wish Ellen and Stephen every blessing in their future together.

Judging of the winter barley, wheat and oats Co Armagh cereal competition will take place on 24th July.

All entries must be forwarded to any of the three Co Armagh group offices by Friday 20th July.
