Barbecue fundraisers for Larne Group

Cheque presentation from Larne Group and the young farmers to SPINI

THE Larne Group Ulster Farmers’ Union have just completed a busy Summer period, this included two barbecues.

The first one was a charity function jointly run with Gleno Young Farmers’ Club in aid of SPINI which raised £600.

This was a “Not so Young Farmers” night, which was held in the Larne Rugby Club premises at Glynn.

The Not so Young Farmers kept up the tradition of being “Not so Early” in attending the event. Old habits die hard.

However at some stage of the night the Clubhouse was packed and we were entertained by the Peter Steele band Harmony. Peter Steele is also the director of the charity SPINI.

The food was cooked by Tom McMaster, from McMaster Home Farm Meats, and everyone enjoyed a super night. The main emphasis of the event was to socialise and raise funds for a very worthy cause SPINI.

The second social night was held in the Wellington Rec Football Club. The music was provided by Wully Magill, and again the food was provided and cooked by Tom McMaster. The charity to benefit from the funds raised on the night was multiple sclerosis, amounting to £500.

Both of these events were a good opportunity for the members to come out for the night and forget their troubles with the weather on the farm.

A special thanks must go to all the sponsors who provided gifts for the ballot and auction for both events.

The first meeting of the winter programme is being held on Tuesday, October 2, in the Wellington Rec (kindly loaned) and the speaker is Ian Stevenson, of the LMC. Ian is giving an update on the current affairs in the meat industry.

The group chairman Samuel Brennan, extends a warm welcome to all members to come along to the meeting and especially would encourage the younger members who have been coming along to continue to attend, and bring their friends.

Samuel states: “We have a very exciting programme planned for the winter months, starting with a trip to Scotland which is over prescribed already.”

Mr Brennan is looking forward to his second year in Office as Chairman.
