South Londonderry Group kicked-off the new winter season of group meetings on 28th September with a prominent speaker, Michael Hanley (pictured), CEO of Lakeland Dairies, addressing a joint meeting with South Tyrone and East Tyrone groups.

Mr Hanley gave an outline of the current global influences on the volatility within the dairy sector.

The meeting all in all was well attended reflecting the current interest in this very topical subject.

In mid-October, there was a Social evening held for the group in the Royal Hotel, Cookstown and this very entertaining night was enjoyed by all who attended, which included some very good food and music by The Brook Boys.

The beginning of November saw a fascinating story related by two local men, the Derby brothers, to a meeting on Farm First Aid and Safety. They related how one had saved the others life by a simple act of first aid given by instruction over the phone from an emergency call handler. This was followed by a presentation by Ed Patterson from the NFU Mutual, who spoke on Farm Safety and Risk Management. December’s meeting was addressed by Gary Hawkes from the UFU, who spoke on renewable energy, while David Mark from Moy Park gave their perspective on current developments in the poultry sector.

The silage competition winners were as follows: Marshall Bros, Dairy Section; James McKay, Beef Section; Eric Thom, Alternative Forage Section.

Please note the next meeting will be the President’s Area Meeting on 25th January 2016 at 8pm in the Lodge Hotel, Coleraine.

If there are any farmers in the Mid-Ulster area who are not currently members of
the Group, but are interested in joining, contact James at the Group office on 028 7963 2127.
