Group Focus: Co Fermanagh

MEMBERS from the County Fermanagh Ulster Farmers’ Union Office jetted off to France for an educational and informative trip in the Clermont-Ferrand region.

The trip consisted of the 44 members from the Fermanagh Group visiting the Sommet de L’Elevage International Agricultural Show, which is the largest show in Europe. The trip was organised by Heather McLaughlin, Europe Direct NI along with the help of group managers Albert McClelland and David West.

The Sommet de L’Elevage in Clermont-Ferrand is one of the largest international shows located in the beautiful surroundings of the Massif Central area of the south of France. The show specialises in livestock breeding, with over 2000 animals being represented throughout the three-day show displaying the highest quality of French animal genetics.

The UFU group had the opportunity throughout the three days to explore the show, visit farms in the Massif Central area and attend relevant conferences, seminars and exhibitions. The group would like to express their appreciation to the Vaughan Trust who are based in Fermanagh, for their continued financial support towards their annual study tour.

South East Fermanagh’s Winter Programme has been a jam-packed agenda so far this year, with Mike Johnston from Dairy Council NI addressing the group in October regarding current and future dairy markets with David Wright, IFJ, speaking to the group at the Killyhevlin Hotel in November addressing the future for Northern Ireland Beef Production.

UFU members also experienced an enjoyable evening at the annual Co Fermanagh dinner dance held at the Killyhevlin Hotel last month. The music for the evening was by Addiction and the charity for the county this year was the Northern Ireland’s Children’s Hospice. Aisling McKenna from the organisation gave the crowd a short presentation on the work they do in Co Fermanagh for children suffering from life-limiting and life threatening conditions.

Finally, we would like to remind everyone that their 2013 diary is available from the group office and we would like to take this opportunity to wish all our members a Happy Christmas and best wishes for 2013.
