THE Ulster Farmers’ Union, along with Winter Barley competition sponsors Syngenta, is pleased to announce that William Russell, from Ardstraw in North Tyrone, has been awarded first place in the 2012 UFU Winter Barley Cereal Competition.

A very close second place was awarded to Raymond Wilson from Portaferry Co Down, and coming in a respectable third place was Boyd and Michael Kane who are members of the North West Derry group. The 2012 judges for this year were Robin Bolton from CAFRE; Pat Turley a local farmer; and Raymond Hilman from Syngenta.

On behalf of the judges Robin Bolton said: “We would like to congratulate the entrants on the high quality of the crops produced this year. The standard was exceptional and all the crops were a credit to the growers involved, especially the winning fields, which combined excellent weed and disease control with overall optimum nutrition and crop uniformity leading to high yield potential. Management of the crops was obvious in this difficult growing season and it was a difficult challenge to separate the winning fields.

UFU President Harry Sinclair said: “I would like to extend my congratulations to the three finalists and especially to William Russell, winner of the winter barley category. The UFU Cereals Competition recognises the talent of cereal growers in Northern Ireland and all three finalists should be proud to have been selected.”

There is still time for cereal growers to enter the Oats, Winter Wheat, and Spring Barley cereal competition categories for the cereal competition.

The closing date for local group entries to be judged and forwarded to the UFU headquarters is Wednesday 25th July at noon, please contact your group manager for details of your local group competition deadline.

The awards for the Winter Barley, Oats, Winter Wheat and Spring Barely cereal competition categories will be officially presented at the Seeds and Cereals Presentation lunch planned for later this year.
