THE UFU President’s Area Meetings got underway this week with large attendances in Fermanagh and Armagh. There was plenty to discuss with most sectors under pressure with rising costs and disappointing farm gate prices.

President’s Area Meetings continue in the week ahead with a meeting in the Tullyglass Hotel, Ballymena on Tuesday night and the Lodge Hotel Coleraine on Wednesday night.

All meetings are at 8pm and all UFU members are invited to attend.

The UFU team gave a comprehensive update on progress in the CAP Reform negotiations and the potential future structure of the Single Farm Payment. Ireland now hold the Presidency of the EU and there is an intense effort being made to secure a CAP deal before the end of June when the Presidency is taken over by Lithuania.

Members were also given updates on a wide range of current issues including: farm safety; cash flow difficulties; Single Farm Payment progress and maps; LFA dual claims process; Rural Development and Agri-Environment schemes; relationship with processors and retailers and the Supermarket Adjudicator; National Parks; Animal Health and Rural Crime.

Harry Sinclair said: “We have put across a lot of information and have also taken on board a lot of view points from our members. All our members are invited to attend these meetings and air their views as well as get an information update from the UFU team. The meetings are being held against a difficult backdrop in the industry and the large turnouts are probably a reflection of the fact that members want to discuss which direction farming is taking. We all enjoy meeting the members and are looking forward to meeting more members in the week ahead. The focus of our meetings in the past week have been around how we can restore a profitable margin in our businesses – this has been missing in 2012 for most of our members.”

The dates, venues and times for the 2013 UFU President Area Meetings are as follows:

Tuesday 15th January - Tullyglass Hotel, Ballymena, Co. Antrim

Wednesday 16th January - The Lodge Hotel, Coleraine, Co. Londonderry

Tuesday 22nd January - Slieve Donard, Newcastle, Co Down

Thursday 24th January - Silver Birch Hotel, Omagh, Co. Tyrone

All meetings begin at 8pm.
