ON January 16 the Lagan Group welcomed new assistant group manager, Ruth McKelvey to the team.

Ruth has recently graduated from the University of Ulster with a BSc (Hons) in Communication. Ruth grew up on a dairy and suckler farm outside Castlederg in Co Tyrone. She has always had a keen interest in the family farm and helping out where she can. Coming from this practical background Ruth understands the issues that farmers can face on a daily basis.

Ruth’s interest grew whilst working closely with many local farmers in a local agri-supply store. This enabled her to establish a rapport within the local community and it also enhanced her knowledge of the industry’s needs.

Since coming to Lisburn, Ruth has had the opportunity to attend the Lagan Group meeting which was held on the 27th February. Guest speaker Donald Eakin from McCauley and Ritchie Solicitors presented a very informative discussion on legal matters.

On a more social aspect Ruth was also involved in the 2012 Moira Outing which saw 50 members travel to Lusk, outside Dublin. Two large vegetable farms were visited and it proved to be a very interesting and enjoyable day.

Ruth commented: “I am very excited about getting settled into my career with the NFU Mutual and the Ulster Farmers’ Union, within the Lisburn area.

“Farming has been a huge part of my life and I can’t wait to help the local farmers in any way I can.”
