UFU Farm Family Health and Safety Roadshow
Five UFU group offices have come together to hold a Farm Family Health and Safety Roadshow for their members. The event will take place on Tuesday 23 October 2012 at AFBI, Hillsborough. The Ulster Farmers’ Union along with the South Eastern Health and Social Care Trust and the Public Health Agency would like to invite all UFU members with their friends and families to come along to the ‘Health & Safety Roadshow’ event on Tuesday 23rd October from 12-4.30pm at the Agri-Food and Biosciences Institute (AFBI), Hillsborough.
UFU President Harry Sinclair said: “The UFU Health & Safety Roadshow is shaping up to be a diverse and exciting event with something for everyone. The purpose of this event is to get more farmers to take on-farm safety more seriously. Farming currently ranks as one of the most hazardous working sectors with the four main causes of death being machinery related incidents, livestock accidents, falls and falling objects and drowning or gassing. Since April 2007, 41 people in Northern Ireland have been killed as a direct result of agricultural activities and many more have been seriously injured.”
The UFU’s focus on Farm Safety in the 2012-2013 Winter Programme, aims to raise an awareness of the importance of sensible and practical health and safety to the farming community. Organisations associated with Farm Safety will be represented at the event. They include: the Health and Safety Executive NI, Vulcan Inspection Services and NFU Mutual. The UFU are also pleased to welcome a wide variety of health organisations to the Roadshow, where there will be an opportunity for members to have a full ‘Farmers’ MOT’ check covering blood pressure, diabetes and cancer screening plus many more.
Wendy McDowell, Community Health Development Worker, South Eastern Trust commented: “The South Eastern Trust Health Development Team are delighted to be working in partnership with UFU to promote a healthy lifestyle in the farming community.
“Farmers are very busy, and often don’t have time to think about their health. They are under-users of health services, with time often the barrier to accessing health care. It is hoped this initiative will improve the health and well-being of farmers and their families by increasing access to health screening services, providing health related advice and information, and signposting to existing services for further advice and support.
“The UFU are also delighted to have AFBI attending the event. There will be representatives on hand to discuss any technical issues concerning members. They will provide information about relevant local research relating to renewable energy and will be giving a tour of their anerobic digestor.”
The Ulster Farmers’ Union would like to encourage all members to put this date in their diary so they can take advantage of this unique opportunity of having all these organisations together at AFBI Hillsborough. The Roadshow promises to be an informative and enjoyable event suitable for the whole family and definitely should not be missed.
Admission to the event is free of charge. Refreshments kindly provided by the South Eastern Health & Social Care Trust will be available throughout the day and there will also be onsite car parking and toilet facilities available.
