Representatives from UFU held a meeting with the Irish Farmers Association earlier this week to discuss the challenges currently facing the potato and vegetable sectors.
At the meeting discussions mainly focused on the functionality of the supply chain.
Also taken into account was the 2015 crop, the concentration and buying power of the retail multiples, the threat of imports, changes in consumption patterns, the upcoming Christmas markets – the quality of their stocks and rising costs of labour in NI/Republic of Ireland. The group also discussed challenges facing the mushroom sector and looked at the current state of play for the industry. Those in attendance received an update on the potato promotion campaign in NI/Republic of Ireland.
