The Ulster Farmers’ Union along with Musgrave Retail Partners NI (MRPNI) are delighted to announce the winners of the 2014/2015 schools competition.
The initiative, which took the form of a competition was available to all nursery, primary and special schools across Northern Ireland. Pupils were invited to create pieces of visual art as a class, with the chance to win fantastic prizes for their school.
They were challenged both creatively and technically to produce a picture or poster, a collage, or a sculpture using any materials possible. Entries from Nursery, P1-2 and P3-4 classes were based upon the ‘Seasons of Farming’ theme, whereas, entries submitted from P5-7 were created around a ‘Farm Safety’ theme.
Since December classes have been busy designing their farming themed creations, with the winning projects including Sally the Farm Safety Cow - a life size papier mache cow, story boards and 3D models explaining the ‘Seasons of Farming’.
UFU Deputy President Barclay Bell said: “Musgrave’s support for our schools competition is invaluable in helping to ensure we raise young people’s awareness of farming and farm safety. Without agriculture, there would be no food production.
“Almost all the food we consume is either produced on, or made out of farm produce. It’s a huge part of Northern Ireland’s economy, with over 24,000 farms which provide employment for around 50,000 people.
“So through initiatives such as this, the message we’re trying to pass onto the younger generation is that farming matters to everyone, especially farm safety.
“Overall, the Judges were delighted by the level of creativity shown through the entries with the winning school classes producing some extraordinary pieces. The winning pieces truly conveyed the message highlighted by the category areas, ‘Seasons of Farming’ and ‘Farm Safety’.”
