Successful summer for Randalstown club

The evening was a great success gaining local interest and support. Well done to Straid YFC Men’s and Randalstown ladies Rugby team who gained first place in their respective sections. Throughout the remainder of Civic Week members took part in a knock out competition and dressed up as superheroes for the finale parade through the town.

Community spirit continued as members volunteered on James Alexander’s Farm and Hillstown farm shop as part of the open farm weekend. Members were kept busy helping set up, taking farm tours and car parking duties at both venues.

Members remained busy over the summer months participating in a range of competitions including Stock judging and silage assessment, building a bridge at the County Antrim Build It heats and building and racing a raft as part of this year’s John Bradley challenge.

Ashleen Agnew gained second place in the junior home management finals whilst Mark Johnston, Harry Thompson and Danielle Foster each placed at the stock judging and silage assessment finals at Greenmount.

The club’s sports teams travelled weekly to local sports nights, shows and competed at tag rugby heats. This year teams sported brand new sports tops. The football tops were kindly sponsored by Dessie Mills Agricultural Mechanical Services. The tug-of-war teams sported new shirts which were kindly donated by Wilson Mills Building Contracts.

County Antrim competition day was held at Antrim Show in July. Randalstown YFC took second place in the digger competition whilst the tug-of-war teams pulled their way to victory with the club’s ladies’ team placing first and the men’s placing second in their respective sections. Within the home industries section, the club continued their success with many members picking up prizes for baking, floral arts and arts and crafts.

The club held their annual friends and family fun night in July at Shanes Castle. Many past and present members attended the evening which consisted of bouncy castles, music and a barbecue. Many thanks to all who attended this event and the committee members for all their organisation into the event.

With the summer season coming to a close, members are looking forward to the winter programme which begins on Tuesday, September 6, with a welcome evening and fun night.
