THE finals of the Young Farmers' Clubs of Ulster (YFCU) Floral Art Competition took place at the Balmoral Show on Wednesday.
In the light of the fabulous sunshine competitors put together a display to depict the theme of "A Night At…"
Under the watchful eye of Judge Alan Beatty, competitors showed no lack of creativity as they clipped the leaves, delicately placed flowers and tied ribbons to their arrangements.
Some displays were very modern while other competitors decided on more traditional interpretations. Ellie McConnell (Cappagh YFC); Adelle Milligan (Curragh YFC); Janette Stirling (Glarryford YFC); Glenda Ward (Hillsborough YFC); Ruth McMaster (Lisnamurrican YFC); Christina McCollam (Lylehill YFC); Alexander Lyttle (Newtownards YFC); Emma Hughes (Trillick and District YFC); Rachel Gibson (Trillick and District YFC); certainly portrayed their skill and their floral arrangements would not have been out of place alongside the other professional displays on show.
Over 200 competitors had taken part in the Floral Arts heats and to get to the final was a magnificent achievement and an opportunity for contestants to showcase their artistic ability at a premiere venue. Alan Beatty was the judge for the day, and following a tough assessment he congratulated all of the competitors on their designs and remarked on the extremely high standard of arrangements that were on display.
YFCU Deputy President Thoburn McCaughey was on hand to present the awards to the winners. Adelle Milligan (Curragh YFC) clinched first place in the 12 to 16 years category. Ruth McMaster (Lisnamurrican YFC) came in a close second, with Alexandar Lyttle (Newtownards YFC) taking third place.
In the 16 to 25 years category, Rachel Gibson (Trillick District YFC) came first, Janette Stirling (Glarryford YFC) came second, while Christina McCollam (Lylehill YFC) came third.
The arrangements were then exhibited in the horticultural tent for visitors at the show to enjoy.
