THE officers and members of Cappagh Young Farmers' Club have been extremely busy recently, dusting off the old minute books, roll books and other pieces of memorabilia, in preparation for the club's biggest event in 10 years.
The club is holding its 60th anniversary dinner dance on Saturday, March 22, in the Silverbirch Hotel, Omagh, to celebrate this milestone in the club's history.
It is only when officers and members started 'digging' through 60 years of history, to prepare a display for the night, that younger members actually realised that their granny or granda, mother or father, aunt or uncle, have been associated with the club.
Indeed, it starts to become very clear just how many past-members have passed through this very successful branch of the young farmers' club and just how many people the club has touched and how they held the association in such high esteem over the years.
In 1947, Mr William Girvan, a representative from the headquarters of the Young Farmer' Clubs of Ulster organised the first meeting of Cappagh Young Farmers' Club. This was held in the loft of Dunmullan Creamery and after approximately two years the club moved to Dunmullan Orange Hall where meetings are still held today. R H Johnston was elected president; A McConnell, club leader; D J. O'Loane, secretary, and Gerald Mellon, treasurer, and from there the rest is history.
In the past 60 years Cappagh YFC has gone from strength to strength bringing home prizes galore ranging from hostess competitions, tractor handling, public speaking, floral art, stockjudging, The Rose Bowl and Top Club, not forgetting the numerous successes in 'Miss Tyrone,' formerly known as 'Queen of the Cream.'
Successes like these are down to individuals working independently and in teams to make the club stand out from the crowd in County Tyrone and Province-wide.
For four consecutive years Cappagh has been victorious in receiving the county's most prestigious award, known as 'Super Club.' This award is not just presented for winning various county competitions and activities but for getting out there and participating; winning is a bonus but representing the club is a pride and passion for the members of Cappagh.
After 60 years of success, Cappagh YFC is still going strong with over 60 members currently enrolled.
The club can guarantee that the dinner dance will be an unforgettable night, a trip down memory lane for some and hope that all past and present members, parents and supporters will attend the function to join in the celebrations.
Tickets are available from club leader, Gillian Wilson (07749147987]; club secretary, Lisa Pinkerton (07840037108]; club president Kenny Preston (07788146521] or William Wilson (07847373904].
If anyone has memorabilia or photographs of Cappagh YFC covering the past 60 years, it would be very much appreciated if these could be borrowed and used on the night.
