CAPPAGH A YFC were crowned the new champions of the Young Farmers' Clubs of Ulster (YFCU) Ladies Five-a-Side Football at the finals that were held at this year's Balmoral Show.
Six teams took part in the competition, that was also sponsored by Johnson Gilpin & Co. Limited and all the girls on each of the teams were full of enthusiasm helped by the fantastic weather.
The teams in the final were determined at the YFCU Ladies Five-a-Side heats that took place in two heats the Mid Ulster Sports Centre in Cookstown and the Lough View Sports Centre in Dungannon earlier this month. At the heats, a massive 32 participating teams took part and from these Cappagh A YFC, Cappagh B YFC, Coleraine YFC, Kilraughts YFC, Lylehill YFC and Newtownards YFC won a place in the final.
With adrenaline rushing, the girls took to the Cattle Lawn to warm up and then battle it out for a place in the final. They played one league with each team playing each other - names were drawn out of a hat earlier in the day by YFCU Deputy President Thoburn McCaughey. At the end of the league, the top two teams played against each other.
After intense games, Cappagh A YFC and Cappagh B YFC finished top of their respective leagues and played against each other in a highly contested match. The competition and rivalry between the two teams was immense and the noise from the supporters grew loud as the final got underway.
Both teams tried hard to score and the supporters cheered both teams on in the hope that the match would not got to a penalty shoot out situation. With just minutes to spare Emma Pickering from Cappagh A YFC managed to put the ball in the back of the net to put their team 1-0 up.
In the end Cappagh B couldn't find the equaliser and the score line remained 1-0 to Cappagh A who were crown the champions of the YFCU Ladies Five-a-Side football competition 2008.
The YFCU would like to extend a note of thanks to Johnston Gilpin and Co. Limited for their continued support of the event. To Sara Booth, Woman's Football Coordinator for the Irish Football Association (IFA) for her assistance with this year's contest; Sara Eakin also from the IFA for her help in coordinating and referring the contest; to Ian Dunlop (Hillsborough YFC) and Roger McCracken (Ballywalter YFC) for taking the time to referee the games and to Alan Boyd (Straid YFC) for supplying nets for the final..
