OLIVIA Baird (Strabane YFC) has clinched the title of International Miss Macra 2008 at the 37th International Miss Macra Festival held in the beautiful surroundings of Dundrum House Hotel in Tipperary (31st July - 4th August).
The festival has become one of the biggest events in the Macra na Feirme calendar and was eagerly awaited by girls from every corner of the country and abroad who made the journey to participate.
On Saturday the girls were put through their paces by the adjudicators in their interviews before taking part in an evening of cabaret where they were called on stage in pairs and asked some questions about themselves before performing a party piece.
The girls then attended a sports day on Sunday held at Clonoulty GAA where everyone got the chance to take part in a variety of novelty games and enjoyed a BBQ. The highlight of the evening was the Banquet and the Grand Finale of International Miss Macra 2008.
At midnight Jenni Wilson (Miss Scotland), International Miss Macra 2007, handed over her crown to YFCU's very own Olivia Baird (Miss Tyrone). Along with receiving the prestigious title of Miss Macra 2008, Olivia also got €1,000, Tipperary Crystal, a diamond necklace from sponsor's Michael's Jewellers and a Perpetual Trophy, kindly sponsored by Dundrum House Hotel.
Olivia was delighted to be crowned Miss Macra 2008 and said;
"I was completely shocked to be announced the winner of the Miss Macra 2008 contest. This has been a brilliant experience and a great weekend. I hope to promote this festival amongst YFCU members and encourage them to become involved in the work of Macra as there would be opportunities for clubs to take part in cross border exchanges and of course, encourage the girls to take part in next year's festival".
