SESKINORE Young Farmers' Club concluded its successful 2007-08 season with its annual parents' night and presentation of silverware at Kelly's Inn, Ballygawley.
William Crawford, club president, welcomed parents, members and guest speaker, Mr Jim Riddell, a founder member of the club.
Graeme Hawkes, club secretary, read the minutes of the last meeting.
The main part of the evening took the form of a love
ly meal. Graeme gave a detailed secretary's report for the year.
Clive Rainey, club treasurer, delivered his treasurer's report of the club's finances over the past year before guest speaker Mr Riddell took the floor.
Mr Riddell thanked members for inviting him and congratulated them on their achievements during the year as was evident by the array of silverware on display. He congratulated Graeme and Clive on their reports.
He told members and friends his life story, which had evolved around the YFC in Seskinore, farming and business ventures.
The central theme of Mr Riddell's speech was to encourage members to avail of any opportunities they could within the young farmers' organisation to gain experience.
A progressive farmer, innovation was key to his success. He was always keen to pioneer an enterprise or venture which he had seen working in the mainland UK or US.
He told members of the ongoing government schemes and incentives throughout the 60s, 70s and 80s and the need for diversification such as he did by buying machinery in mainland Britain and selling it here or sowing maize crop. This emphasised the importance of grasping what chances came one's way - sometimes making the most of a bad situation.
He commended the efforts of the club for their community spirit and charitable work.
He told parents to continue their support and encouragement of the young people and extolled the opportunities afforded to young people by the young farmers' organisation, and said it was an experience as they embarked on the 'University of Life.'
