THE Ulster Farmers' Union has welcomed the announcement by Minister Michelle Gildernew that the 2010 application period for the Countryside Management Scheme will open on the 10th of March, for three weeks.
Commenting on the announcement, Graham Furey, UFU President said: "We wrote to the Minister last year urging her to reopen the application period for this important scheme as soon as possible and we are pleased that will now happen. The opening of the scheme will now enable the backlog of applications already made in 2008, and new applicants, to be considered for this environmental funding programme."
Graham Furey commented further: "We welcome the Minister's recognition of the valuable contribution which farmers make to managing the countryside, through agri environment schemes and in many other ways. The reopening of the Countryside Management Scheme creates the potential to further increase both the number of farmers participating and the number of hectares under environmental management, in line with DARD's commitment in the Programme for Government."
