Aldi teams up with Foróige to create community gardens and crown National Junior Baker

Aldi have teamed up with Foróige, the National Youth Development Organisation, for the second year running to showcase the budding talent of junior bakers and gardeners at the National Ploughing Championships.

Sean Campbell, CEO of Foróige, said: “The build up to the National Ploughing Championships has involved many dedicated hours of hard work and creative achievement for young gardening and baking enthusiasts throughout Ireland.

“Fostering the greatness of young people and providing them with innovative opportunities is exactly what Foróige is about.

“Without the support of Aldi this programme would not have been possible and it has been a privilege to watch the level of achievement these young people have been capable of, in both the gardening and baking.”

Community Gardening

Forty young people from youth groups in Offaly and Donegal have been working hard throughout the summer creating gardens to wow the National Ploughing Championship audience.

Donegal’s Community Garden is based upon a fairy theme, inspired by the poetry of William Allingham and the Wild Atlantic Way.

Offaly’s Community Garden portrays the beauty of the bog incorporating a railway motif.

Aldi have sponsored the plants and materials for the young people and provided them with a unique opportunity to learn about gardening processes by being mentored by landscape experts and Aldi plant supplier SAP, whilst cultivating their creativity.

National Junior Baking Competition

Junior bakers have been fighting it out in county and regional competitions throughout Ireland over the last few months, culminating in the 2016 National Junior Baking Finals sponsored by Aldi Ireland in association with Foróige and the National Ploughing Association

Eight hopeful bakers will compete in two semi-final heats on 20th and 21st September on site. The contestants placed first and second in each heat will qualify for the final on Thursday 22nd September in the Aldi Ireland Tent at the National Ploughing Championships.

The theme of this year’s competition is ‘Muffins of the Moment’ and the judges are anticipating some amazing creations from the eight finalists.
