The South Down representative said: “I have been making robust representations to the Minister for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs regarding the need to have an established export trade route for pork to Taiwan.

“Detailed additional information which has been requested by the Taiwan authorities has been supplied for their review. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs remain in close contact with the British Office in Taipei, who are assisting DEFRA in ensuring this negotiation is concluded as swiftly as possible to allow UK exporters access to this important pork market.

“The timely approvals of the export of agri food produce including pork is vital for our local economy in Northern Ireland.

“It is crucial NI exports have access to this additional market. The potential of opening up existing markets, and finding new markets, will give our producers in the pork industry the opportunity to grow, sustain and increase production. It is important to ensure barriers to trade are removed to allow the free flow of exported food and drink.”
