Stephen Johnston runs Drummurry Dairy Farm in Enniskillen Co Fermanagh along with his wife and three kids. Drummurry farm is a third-generation dairy farm currently farming 200 acres owned and 50 rented milking 170 cows plus followers.

Drummurry Farm was previously using electricity for their hot water needs before making the switch to Flogas LPG.

While on an electric water heating system, Stephen found that there was an insufficient supply to keep the water at the temperature they needed. Stephen made the switch to Flogas LPG because it meant the farm had instant hot water and he said he found it particularly useful for getting the temperature right for DIY AI (Artificial Insemination) and heating water to feed calves.

It was whist searching for a better alternative, Stephen heard about Flogas LPG through his local hardware store, Beatty Hardware and Farm Supplies.

The Flogas solution

Stephen’s local Flogas area representative called out to the farm to show how the Flogas water heating system works. Stephen said he was very impressed with the ability to have hot water on-demand up to 85°C. Previously the water had to be heated, and then stored.

Flogas say the LPG-fuelled hot water system is very efficient and cost-effective, compared to electricity, as there are no hot water storage costs involved. By using LPG, people can also control the amount of hot water used and it reduces KVAs (the amount of VoltageAmps of energy needed)

“You can really see an improvement for most farmers. The old electric system might not have been able to get up to the temperature of 85 degrees and when you have that temperature it really improves the TBC (Total Bacterial Count),” explains Martin Loughran, Flogas area representative.

Stephen decided to make the switch and was advised of the best tank location and the necessary siting guidelines for the farm.

Easy changeover process

The local installer did a site walkthrough and advised on the best location to install the heater units and the optimum distances from the heaters and water taps.

A Flogas bulk LPG tank was delivered and sited, and two wall-mounted water heaters were installed and connected.
