Planning underway for CAFRE’s Spring Virtual Open Events

Following the very successful Virtual Open Days last autumn, the staff at the College of Agriculture, Food and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) are making plans for a week of Virtual Open Events beginning 22 March 2021.

CAFRE is the only land-based college in Northern Ireland and has the reputation for offering courses that are designed to prepare young people for successful careers in the agri-food industry.

Courses on offer include Agriculture, Food Equine and Horticulture up to Honours degree and Land Based Engineering, Veterinary Nursing and Floristry up to Level 3.

CAFRE’s ethos is very much ‘learning by doing’. Knowledge developed in the classroom is enhanced with skills learned in our practical facilities. And these are not just any practical facilities.

Deirdre Cooper, Senior Careers Advisor explained: “As a result of our need to support the local agri-food and land-based industries with the latest innovations in science, technology and business management techniques, our students have access to first class facilities on each of our campuses. In addition, CAFRE’s highly qualified and experienced staff make best use of these in the delivery of our courses.”

Progression is also encouraged so a young person can start their journey at Certificate level and progress all the way up to Honours degree and beyond.

During their time at CAFRE, many students chose to stay in the on-campus student accommodation. Lesley-Anne Beacom, Student Services Manager at Greenmount Campus added: “There is accommodation for over 300 students at the three campuses which offer a friendly, caring environment, where students can socialise, pursue cultural and sporting interests, and of course enjoy themselves.”

If you looking at options after your GCSEs remember that Level 3 vocational qualifications are equivalent to A Levels and ideal for those students who prefer a more applied approach to learning.
