The annual St Patrick’s Schools’ Jumping at The Meadows was another great success with good entries across the board.
Although rain threatened at times, competitors were blessed with a glorious day and the standard of jumping was impressively high.
Arena 1 started on the stroke of 9am with the Novice Teams. First to go was Banbridge Academy All Stars who set a very high standard by posting three double clears in super quick time. Two other teams, Ballymena Academy Red and Ballyclare Secondary Blue, managed the zero score but none were able to match the Co Down team’s times and they headed home with the specially designed shamrock rosettes and the top placed prizes.
The Tack and Turn Out Competitions were judged by Shellagh and Maeve Gault who had no doubt about the winning Novice team, awarding the prize to Ballyclare Secondary Blue who were impressively clean, neat, tidy and matching in every respect.
The Novice Individual competitions are notoriously competitive and St Patrick’s Day was no exception.
There were breath-taking rounds completed in very fast times but the centre place on the podium was reserved for Cullybackey College pupil, Hannah Thompson who is no strangers to success in speed competitions on board Sophie She had in excess of one second second lead from runner-up Hannah Agnew on Butterfly.
The Open Team competition saw Down High School featuring very prominently with three teams in the top six and one of those winning the tack and turn out. However, victory was reserved for the Banbridge Academy Superstars who had a six second lead over second placed St Catherine’s College.
Individually, Keevy Molloy from Cullybackey College won the show by just over one hundredths of a second over second placed Kerrie Kerr on Pidget. Kerrie went one step further by winning the Premier Open class in very fine style on Knockanaveigh Limited Edition with Rachel Chapman taking second place on Pippa.
As ever, the primary schools created great excitement and their standards are very high indeed. Many of those competing are regulars from the Winter League and month on month the fortunes change. This time round it was Paddy’s Lucky Day for The Mighty Midgets Who finished ahead of the Tack & Turn Out winners, Fullerton House who were making their debut in this competition.
Simone Leathem made it a day to remember by having two ponies on the winning team, and then went one step further to claim the individual prize from Team mate Megan Nelson on Flash.
This year the Organisers introduced a Primary Individual competition at 50cms and they were delighted to see so many little combinations doing so well. Five finished with double clears and organisers look forward to them all progressing on to the next level.
The Meadows Equestrian Centre would like to thank all judges and stewards who officiated on the day as well as Shellagh and Maeve Gault, who did a super job as Tack Inspectors.
This has certainly turned into an annual event which is very memorable one for so many of the school children.
The next schools competition at the Meadows is a charity event due to be held on Bank Holiday Monday, 4th May with proceeds being divided between Action Cancer and RSA team going to India.
