While Tegan White was competing in the CIC3* class at the International Event in Millstreet, accompanied by her father, Philip, the Northern Region moved en masse to the family home at Maddybenny for the latest event which was overseen by Eavan and Fred White.
As always, the welcome was all embracing and the unanimous verdict was of a most enjoyable and relaxed event on an absolutely glorious day.
The hospitality was second to none, supervised by eight year old Zoe McCulloch who ensured that copious amounts of food was supplied with incredible regularity to all officials.
Fred White had spent a busy few weeks working with Course Designer, Adam Stevenson, to provide good educational tracks for all combinations.
Both he and Eavan were on hand to ensure that everything ran smoothly and in a timely manner. The presentation of the entire grounds was extremely impressive and immaculate.
There was only one competitor in the top class of the day but that did not detract from a superb performance by Steven Smith on last week’s winner, the home owned eight year old Grange Bouncer gelding, Anvil Lodge Pinnochio. He scored a 29.8 in his first phase to finish on that mark. He also totally dominated the CNC1* class by taking a one, two, three with the win on his six year old gelding, Dream Master who was sixth last week at Glenpatrick.
Second place went to the Diamond Rock mare, Baby Roller normally campaigned by Trevor who was fulfilling Groomsman duties in England this week. Local lady, Florence Campbell had a day to remember by winning the one star Amateur class on Imperial Master and taking the runner up spot with her other mount, Anvil Diamond.
Holly Wray had a runaway victory in the CNCJ1* class with her mother’s Condios mare, Lily Mae, having achieved the only clear showjumping round over Fred Gutherie’s testing track.
Meanwhile, it was very pleasing to welcome Sarah Moore back to the fold after a four month absence and she certainly returned in style with a win in the EI 100 Amateur class with her nine year old Porsche gelding, Shameless, finishing on her dressage score of 24.8, over three points clear of her nearest rival, Caroline McQuillan on Ruth Robinson’s Porsche gelding, Foxtail Orchid.
Neil Morrison claimed his first victory in the Pre Novice class with Terry Johnston’s Tipperary T, having moved up two places from the first phase following the lowering of coloured poles by the early leaders, Lisa Dundee, who had to settle for second place on this occasion and Michael M’Nally who dropped down into the lower quartile.
The award of most excited winner went to Alex Cleland who topped the leaderboard in the EI100P class on Whisper Grey Dove, after knocking on the door for quite a few weeks. Second place, just one point behind, was the birthday girl, fifteen year old Hollie Smith and her fabulous pony, Gucci 111.
Aoife Carr had a well deserved win on home turf in the EI100J class on Tegan White’s Lux Z mare, Lenamore Lux in a class of changing fortunes across all disciplines. Fionn Clarke occupied the runner up spot on Glenpatrick Cool Guy.
Judith McCarthy followed up her Finvoy victory with another win in the biggest Amateur class of the day, the 90cms, where she added nothing to her flatwork mark to finish half a mark ahead of Bartez campaigned by Lindsay Martin for exactly a year and seldom out of the top six.
One showjumping fence on the ground was an expensive penalty for Catherine Robinson in the EI 90 class where she had to settle for the runner up spot after impressing the dressage judge in phase one. Beverley Caves took advantage of the situation to claim the top spot on Appletees Ultimate Uno, where she remained on her dressage score to win the class.
Another very happy competitor was Katherine Shields wclaimed the winning rosette in the final class, EI 90 P, on Melody Maker who finished 1.5 points clear of the Ballyvannon winner, Katie Good and Ballymourne Lily.
Eventing Ireland Northern Region is deeply indebted to the White family for hosting the second of their two events and creating such a welcoming atmosphere for everyone.
Organisers wish to thank Bann Valley Riding Club, Route branch of the Pony Club, Route Hunt and Causeway Coast for providing so many helpers and resources on the day.
This coming Saturday sees action move to Loughanmore, courtesy of the Dennison Family.
