Huge prize money, meat hampers, grocery hampers, turkeys, fuel vouchers, Christmas stockings and many more generous prizes were up for grabs at Portmore Equestrian Centre’s Christmas Show which was attended by almost 200 competitors.
The day started off with cross poles, followed by 50cm class where it was extremely pleasing to see so many combinations doing so well. Particular praise must go to Charlie Black who was competing in his first show, having taken on the ride of his mother’s Oscar Rua, following her recent accident.
Twenty five combinations took on Ray Buchanan’s track for the Novice Speed competition with just nine managing to keep all the poles intact. The fastest of those was Sam Speers on Peggy who claimed a lovely food hamper very kindly donated by Bushe’s Bakery in Crumlin.
The Open Speed class which had almost forty entries saw victory go to Charlie Hanna on Hazy who took over from the long time leader, Ian Moore on Triple C.
Excitement was really at crescendo point by the time the King and Queen of the Arena was being judged.
There was a top quality entry for this two phase competition with rider after rider improving on their predecessors. Many tried gravity defying turns with mixed results.
Ian Moore, not known for using the handbrake, gave a blistering performance to take the lead with Triple C. However, watching from the wings was Helen Pearson-Murray, another rider who doesn’t hang about, who took incredible turns and great risks which paid off and she took two seconds off Ian’s time and claimed the Queen of the Arena and a meat hamper. Ian won a £50 fuel voucher and was crowned King of the Arena.
Next up was the popular Pairs Competition which was kindly sponsored by Rathlane Farm. Credit must go to all competitors for very swift and tidy changeover of the festively adorned baton. However, winners by a convincing margin were Rachel Baird and Charley Hanna who ensured their families were going to eat at Christmas as they each received a lovely oven ready turkey.
The course designers swung back into action in preparation for the penultimate class of the show – the Six Bar, building a progressively challenging row of fences. All competitors managed to earn their way into the first jump off where only one combination faulted.
The second jump off saw two riders having to bow out and a further one faulting at the next round. By the time it reached the fourth and final jump off, the last fence was sitting at 1.51m. Brogan McCrum on Tailormade for Me and Ian Moore on Triple C made it look extremely easy as they soared over all elements effortlessly to take joint first place.
The feature class of this popular Christmas Show was the Linen Green sponsored Puissance competition.
A great crowd of spectators had gathered to watch rider after rider take on the challenge of the imposing red brick wall which started at 1.10m. All combinations made it through the initial round but only three escaped clear from the first jump off to face the wall at 1.40m. Suzanne Posnett and Jess had their sights on success and were the only combination to succeed. Annabelle Heffron, representing the sponsor, presented prizes to the top six.
Portmore Equestrian Centre is deeply indebted to all sponsors and helpers of this Show. They would also like to thank all the patrons for their support throughout the year and look forward to welcoming them to their widening calendar of events in 2016.
