Two-day Banbridge Show declared a success

ONCE again Banbridge Show was hailed a major success for the seventh consecutive year although this year the venue changed to The Meadows Equestrian Centre and the show duration extended to two days.

With almost 700 showjumping entries, it was certainly an action packed weekend which saw competitors travelling from far and wide. The bad weather of the preceding days was well forgotten as riders and spectators were able to enjoy the glorious sunshine on both days in the magnificent surroundings of the McCusker domain which is so widely acclaimed for its excellence in all aspects of hosting a show.

The culmination of a very busy ‘horse’ programme on Saturday which saw both arenas in action until late in the day, was the Ulster Region 1.30 (S) Grand Prix. There were twenty combinations, from a start list in excess of 60, that made it through to the jump off in this very popular competition which has now become a showcase class. The course, which was designed and built by Banbridge Show Director, Ray Buchanan, drew great praise from many competitors for its technicality, fairness and challenges. Although, the jump-off, was taking place well into late evening, there was a tremendous atmosphere and a great crowd of spectators, enjoying the glorious sunshine as they applauded and encouraged each competitor. They certainly were well rewarded for their stamina as this was, undoubtedly, one of the most exciting Ulster Region Grand Prix’s in recent times.

The first three riders in the jump off faulted and it was left to Harvey Smith and Porscha to deliver the first clear round but his lead was short-lived as 5th to go, Young Rider, Sophie Dalm, produced a round which was executed with extreme speed and precision and took her to the top of the leaderboard by a margin of 8 seconds on her mother’s Unique, an 11 year old gelding by the sire Concorde out of a Burggraaf mare. Sophie’s time proved impossible to beat as the challenge brought faults to all but three of the remaining 14 competitors. In the end Daniel Coyle came closest by less than two hundredths of a second on Linzi Johnston’s 11 year old Concorde mare, Uptown girl with Edward Little slotting into 3rd place on David Prentice BMW’s Qualisca de Vansichant. Sophie also claimed 6th place on Vivaldi as the fastest four faulter.

All 13 pony classes on Sunday were extremely well supported and the standard of jumping was very high throughout the day. Aoife Dooley won the top 148 class on Derravaragh Gambler while Ciara Kennedy topped the leader board in the148cms 1.10m class on her mother’s Lishmar Stormy Boy.

The Roulston girls, Olivia, Leah and Alana had their fair share of success with Leah winning the top two 128 classes and Olivia winning the equivalent in the 138 section and all three gaining a total of eleven other placings.

Ray Buchanan, show director and chairman of the organisers, The Iveagh Showjumpers, paid tribute to the sponsors whose generosity, even in the current economic climate, bore testimony to the good will surrounding Banbridge Show. He also thanked the many volunteers – judges, course builders, arena party, officials and secretariat who had worked tirelessly in the run –up to the event and on the day. He also expressed sincere thanks to the McCusker family for facilitating the Show on both days and for ensuring that all amenities were of their usual superlative quality. Of course, thanks were also due to all the competitors, many of whom travelled long distances to pledge their support.
