660 store cattle and weanlings for sale at Markethill

An entry of 660 store cattle and weanlings at Markethill on Saturday 19th March sold in a noticeably firmer trade particularly the better quality stock. Buyers from throughout Northern Ireland were in attendance.

HEIFERS: The 220 store heifers returned an exceptionally good trade for a very high quality entry of heifers. Middleweight heifers sold to £223 for 466k at £1040 from a Silverbridge farmer. All top quality types from £185 to £206 per 100 kilos. Good quality forward heifers sold to £1160 for 618k (188) for a Crossmaglen farmer and up to £202 for 532k at £1075 for a Dorsey producer. All good quality forward heifers from £178 to £193 per 100 kilos. Lightweight heifers sold to £220 for 366k a £805 for a Newtownhamilton farmer. Main demand from £188 to £209 per 100 kilos. Second quality heifers sold in a noticeably firmer demand from £165 to £177 per 100 kilos.

A Newtownhamilton producer sold 20 mostly Char bullocks averaging 459k at £888 each, £194 with a top of £242 for 418k at £1010. A Downpatrick farmer sold 20 forward store bullocks averaging 542k at £1005 each with a top of £206 for 506k at £1040. All good quality forward bullocks sold from £178 to £201 per 100 kilos. Good quality Friesian bullocks sold readily from £130 to £145 for 636k at £920.

Dairy cows sold to £1170 at Markethill on Tuesday 22nd March for a calved heifer from a Newry farmer. A Kilkeel farmer received £1075 for a calved heifer.

CULL COWS: The 85 cull cows sold in a steady demand. Beef-bred cows from £115 to £130 for 886k at £1150 and for 808k at £1045. Fleshed Friesian cows from £95 to £104 for 658k at £658. Second quality friesians from £80 to £90 per 100 kilos with the poorest types from £55 to £75 per 100 kilos.

CALVES: The 190 lots in the calf ring sold in a very good demand with prices firmer on the week. Bull calves to £380 for a four week old Lim. Several more £270 to £345 each. Heifer calves were in exceptionally good demand to reach £485 for a Lim. All good quality heifers from £270 to £420 for an Angus. Others from £170 to £250 each. Young Friesians bull calves to £95 each. Main demand good quality lots from £50 to £90 each.
